In a word DANGEROUS! But can be fixed! : Torin T83505 3.5 Ton Low Profile Service Jack

I was putting my Crown Victoria in the air when it suddenly shifted? Luckily I was not under it and was able to guide in down onto the Jack stands. If I had been under it I never would have been able to gain the leverage to control it in the air and it would have toppled the jack stand and land on my head. I examined the jack and found one of the supports which held the right wheel had collapsed which allowed the car to shift nearly a foot at full jack extension. Even after the jack body hit the ground the momentum generated by the car shifting from left to right would have carried it completely over if I had not been standing next to the car in a position to hold it in the opposite direction of the shift.
The reason the wheel support gave way was that it had separated from the jack body. The support is welded at the side and the top but not at the bottom edge where most of the stress is exerted when in use. With no weld at the point of greatest stress the other welds soon tear lose, not because they were necessarily (probably) bad welds but because the direction of stress is perpendicular to the direction of their greatest strength. It's like tearing a paperback in half verses pulling it apart straight on. The strenghth straight on is much stronger and harder to pull apart.
It also started leaking shortly after I purchased it.
I'm not suggesting you don't purchase it but I am suggesting that you take it to your local welder and have a bead run along the bottom of each wheel support before you get under it, with or without stands .
